Pulling into the driveway
Paved with rocks
Jumping out of the car
Running up the stairs
Into the entrance hall
Past the mirror that hangs on the wall
Push open the kitchen door
Race past the yellow cabinets
where the tenants keep their food
Chew gum
Playing cards
Humming
Light on over the table
She is waiting for our arrival
Spaghetti on the stove
Excited hellos
Nana! Nana!
Off we go
Through the laundry room
Out the side door
Running across the yard
Pitch black out
To our cousins’
Back to Nana’s
Fight over her bed
Soft pink flowers cover her walls
Curtains blowing in the ocean breeze
Through Nana’s room to Bapa’s
Blue flowers cover the wall
Pull the green shades
Off to bed
Morning breaks
Eggs frying
Smell of bacon and coffee fills the room
Rooster cock-a-doodle-doing
Sunshine creeping through the shades
Jump out of bed
Through Nana’s room
Into the laundry room
Dryer humming
Back door open
Curtains blowing in the breeze
Laughter spilling from the kitchen
There she is
Back at her table
In her chair
Her spot
By the window
Sipping coffee
Chewing gum
Humming
“Hello my dear heart”
Blue polka-dot dress
Soft skin
Double chin
And yes, possibly swearing
Reciting poetry
“Do you know how much I love you?
Can you sense how much I care?”
“Tell me it’s spring and I’ll tell you
Some of the things my children do.”
Off to the living room with patio furniture
Vinyl green with white flowers
Green carpet
Baby grand piano
Bathroom with a squeaky door
Back to the kitchen
Cards put away
Coffee cup empty
Ann and Hope her she comes!!
